No, caganer isn’t a slang word for shitting giant, it’s a real thing. In and around Catalonia you will find a ton of caganar's during the holiday season. It is a traditional item and no one knows when it began it has been known to be used since the 1700’s.
One of the explanations for the man seen shitting in yards along with nativity scenes is that the doodie that he leaves brings good health and happiness to everyone from fertilizing the ground. Another theory states it’s just a fun thing to have in the yard.
I wonder if this tradition will take root in other countries. This giant shitting giant sits in the middle of a huge mall. Can you imagine going to a mall during the holiday as a mum with children in tow and finding a huge shitting man in the center. Explain that one!
